Uzbekistan (population approximately 36 million, capital Tashkent) is Central Asia's most populous country and has undergone significant liberalisation since President Shavkat Mirziyoyev replaced the authoritarian Islam Karimov (who ruled 1989–2016). Uzbekistan is the world's 6th-largest gold producer (Navoi Mining and Metallurgical Combinat — NMMC — operates the Muruntau gold mine, one of the world's largest open-pit gold mines and among its lowest-cost producers), and a historically significant cotton producer — the 'white gold' of Soviet-era Central Asia. Forced child and adult labour in cotton harvesting has historically been a major human rights and trade compliance concern; following significant advocacy pressure and reforms, the Uzbek Forum for Human Rights and Cotton Campaign reported in 2022 that Uzbekistan had eliminated systemic state-forced labour in cotton, and major brands began lifting sourcing bans. Uzbekistan has become a significant automotive producer: GM Uzbekistan (formerly UzDaewoo, now producing Chevrolet-branded vehicles under GM licence in Asaka) is the dominant domestic brand and also exports to CIS markets.
