Market Context — Tunisia

Tunisia (population approximately 12 million, capital Tunis) was the birthplace of the Arab Spring (the December 2010 self-immolation of Mohamed Bouazizi in Sidi Bouzid triggered the Jasmine Revolution that ousted President Ben Ali in January 2011 and inspired the broader regional uprisings). Tunisia had the Arab Spring's only sustained democratic transition — the 2014 Constitution was internationally praised — but President Kais Saied suspended parliament and concentrated power in July 2021, and a new constitution concentrating executive authority was approved by referendum in July 2022. Tunisia has a deep EU economic relationship via the 1995 Euro-Mediterranean Association Agreement (the first between the EU and a southern Mediterranean country) giving preferential market access for manufactured goods and agricultural products. Tunisia is the world's third or fourth largest olive oil producer (varying by harvest year) and one of its largest exporters; the Chemlali and Chetoui olive varieties of the Sahel and Sfax regions have increasing GI recognition. Phosphate rock extraction (Gafsa basin — among the world's largest reserves) for fertiliser export has historically been a major sector, though social unrest in mining regions has constrained output.
