Beverage Packaging Design: Cans, Bottles, and Labels That Perform at Shelf
The drinks fixture is one of the most visually saturated environments in retail. Every major grocery store cooler contains hundreds of individual SKUs, each competing for attention in a 3-metre refrigerated bay where a shopper typically spends less than ten seconds before reaching for a product. The design challenge is acute: packaging must be legible at distance, identifiable in low light behind refrigerator glass, and distinctive enough to be found again on repeat purchase.
At the same time, beverage packaging is technically demanding. Beverage containers are filled at high speed on automated lines with strict tolerance requirements. Labels must perform under condensation, ice, and handling. Cans must carry print that survives a high-temperature lithography process before the can is formed. Getting the design right is one problem; getting it production-ready is another.
Beverage Container Formats
Aluminium Can
The dominant format for carbonated beverages, energy drinks, hard seltzers, and craft beer. Standard sizes in the US market: 12 fl oz (355ml), 16 fl oz (473ml), and 19.2 fl oz (568ml) — often called a "pint can." In the UK and EU: 250ml, 330ml, and 500ml are standard.
Sleek cans. The sleek can (62mm diameter, same height as standard) and slim can (53mm diameter) are used for energy drinks, sparkling water, and premium mixers where a more elegant silhouette is the design intent. They hold the same volume as a standard can at a narrower profile.
Can artwork production. Cans are printed via offset lithography on flat aluminium sheet before the can is formed. Artwork is supplied as a flat "wrap" showing the entire circumference of the can. The process constraints:
- Maximum 6 colours (CMYK + up to 2 spot Pantone)
- No true photographic reproduction (halftone printing with limited tonal range)
- Minimum text size approximately 1.5mm for acceptable legibility
- No full wraparound bleed at the seam — there is a small gap where the top of the artwork meets the bottom, not a cut line. Both ends of the artwork must be designed to abut neatly at the seam.
- Minimum order quantities are typically 50,000–100,000 cans for major can suppliers (Crown, Ball, Ardagh). Smaller runs (5,000–25,000) are available from short-run can suppliers (Cask, Canworks in the UK; Rexnord and specialty can printers in the US).
Shrink sleeve cans. For smaller runs where minimum offset lithography quantities are prohibitive, cans can be supplied plain and then sleeved with a printed PVC or PETG shrink sleeve. This allows full-colour, photographic-quality artwork on small runs. Shrink sleeves are visible: the seam and the slightly looser appearance of a sleeve is noticeable to experienced buyers, which can affect premium positioning. For craft and local brands at launch, it's a viable route.
Glass Bottle
Glass bottles are used across still and sparkling beverages, spirits (see the separate TTB compliance guide), premium water, kombuchas, and juice. Glass communicates a premium and artisan quality signal unavailable in aluminium or PET.
Applied label. The dominant decoration method for glass bottles is a pressure-sensitive label applied to the glass surface. Label material selection is critical for beverages: labels in chilled conditions accumulate condensation, and paper labels degrade rapidly in cold and wet environments. For any chilled beverage, the label must be a waterproof film material (BOPP or PP) with a waterproof adhesive. Paper labels on a chilled glass bottle will bubble, peel, and fall off — a common mistake by brands designing beverage labels for the first time.
Screen printing (ACL — Applied Ceramic Labelling). For premium glass bottles, the design can be ceramic-fired directly onto the glass surface, producing a label that cannot peel or degrade. Common in premium spirits and some premium water brands. Requires a minimum quantity (typically 5,000–10,000 bottles) and longer lead time, but the result is a superior premium finish.
Embossing. Glass can be embossed with brand marks, product names, or decorative elements as part of the bottle mould. Embossed glass is a strong premium signal and an immediate tactile differentiator. Requires custom mould tooling (see the glass packaging guide for tooling cost range).
Regulatory label placement. For alcoholic beverages, the TTB requires that mandatory information (government warning statement, class designation, alcohol content, net contents) appear on a "label" affixed to the container. PET and HDPE Plastic Bottles
PET (clear) and HDPE (opaque) bottles are used for still water, juices, functional beverages, sports drinks, and non-carbonated health beverages. The lower cost and lighter weight versus glass makes plastic the standard for mass-market beverage brands.
Label wrap percentage. A wraparound pressure-sensitive label covering 95–100% of the bottle circumference is the most common decoration method. Full-wrap labels are essentially a canvas on which the entire bottle surface is the design space — powerful for brand impact but requiring careful management of the front panel "hero" view (the portion visible when the bottle is displayed facing forward on shelf).
Shrink sleeves. Full-bottle shrink sleeves (from just below the cap to just above the base) can cover more of the bottle surface than a pressure-sensitive label, including the shoulder and base areas that labels cannot reach. They're used by brands that want a seamless, all-over decorated appearance. Shrink sleeve production requires minimum quantities (typically 5,000–10,000 units) and a sleeving step in the filling process.
Regulatory Requirements for Beverages
Non-Alcoholic Beverages (FDA)
Non-alcoholic beverages sold in the US are regulated as food by the FDA. The mandatory label elements are governed by 21 CFR Part 101:
- Statement of identity: What the product is ("sparkling water," "energy drink," "kombucha")
- Net contents: Volume in both US customary (fl oz) and metric (mL)
- Nutrition facts panel: Required for most packaged beverages. The serving size must be a reference amount customarily consumed (RACC) — for beverages, this is typically 240ml (8 fl oz) or the entire container if it's consumed in one sitting. Single-serve containers (under 200% of the RACC) may use a "per container" serving size.
- Ingredient list: In descending order of weight
- Allergen declaration: Under FALCPA, major allergens must be declared if present
- Name and address: The responsible domestic party must be declared
For beverages with added caffeine, energy claims, or botanical ingredients with pharmacological activity, additional considerations apply. The FDA has issued guidance on added caffeine in food (including beverages) that brand owners should review.
Alcoholic Beverages (TTB)
Alcoholic beverage labelling is regulated by the TTB, not the FDA. The separate TTB compliance guide covers this in detail. Key requirements include:
- Certificate of Label Approval (COLA) for wine, distilled spirits, and malt beverages in interstate commerce
- Government health warning statement
- Class and type designation
- Alcohol content
- Net contents
- Country of origin (for imported beverages)
UK and EU Beverages
In the UK and EU, non-alcoholic beverages must carry:
- Product name
- Net quantity
- List of ingredients (in descending order by weight)
- Allergen declaration (allergens highlighted in the ingredient list)
- Nutritional information per 100ml (and optionally per serving)
- Best before or use by date
- Country of origin (for certain categories including juice)
- Storage conditions
- Name and address of the food business operator
Design Principles for Beverage Packaging
Chilled Fixture Performance
Beverages displayed in chilled fixtures — refrigerated gondolas, open-front cooler bays, shelf displays — are viewed through condensation on the glass door and under the cool-toned LED lighting standard in modern retail. This creates specific design requirements:
High contrast is essential. Low-contrast designs (light text on light backgrounds, mid-tone on mid-tone) disappear behind condensation and under cool lighting. Dark backgrounds with light text, or strong coloured backgrounds with white text, perform significantly better.
Large, legible hierarchy. The brand name and product type must be readable through a glass door from a metre away. Any typographic element under approximately 14pt at the actual printed scale will not be legible through a cooler door under typical conditions.
The panel that faces forward. Beverage bottles and cans are typically displayed in a single orientation — one face forward. The design should identify the primary reading direction and ensure the most critical communication (brand name, product type, key claim) is concentrated on that face. Designs that assume the consumer will rotate the product to read back-panel information are misaligned with how products are selected at a chilled fixture.
Visual Weight at Shelf Level
Beverages are often displayed at three different shelf heights simultaneously: eye level, knee level, and above-eye level. Design choices that create visual impact at eye level (where the shopper's attention is naturally focused) may need to be reconsidered for knee-level placement, where the shopper is looking down at a foreshortened view of the top of the can or bottle.
Bright top-of-can graphics (the aluminium top of a can is visible at knee-level placement) are used by some craft beer brands specifically to create visual interest at low shelf placement.
Brand Colour and Category Differentiation
The beverage chiller is one of the most densely coloured retail environments. Every major colour is represented by at least one established brand. Selecting a distinctive colour is not enough — the specific shade, the colour combination, and the design system around the colour all determine whether a new brand visually separates itself from the existing occupants of the fixture.

The visual analysis of the fixture will reveal which colours are over-represented, which are absent, and which palettes are associated with which quality and price tiers in the category.
FAQ
Do I need different labels for different markets? Yes if selling in the US and EU/UK simultaneously — the mandatory label elements differ, particularly for nutritional information (FDA nutrition facts panel vs. EU format per 100ml) and allergen declaration format. Some brands produce a single label that includes both formats; others produce market-specific labels.
What finish works best for beverage labels in cold conditions? A gloss or semi-gloss laminate on a waterproof film substrate (BOPP or PP) is the standard for cold and wet environments. The laminate protects the print from moisture damage and gives the label a clean, premium appearance even after condensation. Matte laminates can work aesthetically but are more susceptible to surface marking in wet conditions.
Can I use spot Pantone colours on a can? Yes — up to 2 Pantone spot colours can be added to a CMYK run on standard can lithography. Total colours are limited to 6 (including CMYK base). Discuss with your can supplier which Pantone colours are available in their approved ink systems — not all Pantone references are available as can ink formulations.
