Candle Label Design: Requirements, Materials, and What Makes a Label Actually Work
Candle labels get scrutinised at two completely different distances. A customer browsing an Etsy shop zooms into a 600×600 pixel product photo looking for character, personality, and a reason to trust you over the 40 other options on the page. The same customer picking up your candle in a boutique reads it at arm's length — 30 to 50 centimetres — checking the scent name, burn time, and whether the aesthetic matches their living room.
Most candle label failures happen because the designer optimised for one of these and forgot the other.

- GHS (Globally Harmonised System) — which the US, EU, UK, and most other markets have adopted into their chemical labelling regulations
- EU CLP Regulation (Classification, Labelling and Packaging of substances and mixtures) — applies in the EU and, with some post-Brexit adaptations, the UK
- ASTM F2179 standard for warning labels on candles — widely followed in the US market

The Mandatory GHS/CLP Label Elements
If your fragrance load is above certain thresholds (usually 1% or more, depending on the specific fragrance components), your candle label must include:
Product identifier: The name or code of the product as it appears in the Safety Data Sheet (SDS). For consumer candles, this is typically the product name plus the fragrance name.
Signal word: Either "Warning" or "Danger" — determined by the hazard classification of your fragrance blend. Most consumer candles with standard fragrance concentrations use "Warning."
Hazard statements: Specific standardised phrases describing the nature of the hazard. For a typical candle with a flammable fragrance component and skin/eye sensitiser components, you might see H315 (Causes skin irritation), H317 (May cause an allergic skin reaction), H319 (Causes serious eye irritation), and H412 (Harmful to aquatic life with long lasting effects).
Precautionary statements: Standardised P-statements corresponding to the hazard statements. These include things like P102 (Keep out of reach of children), P264 (Wash hands after handling), and P273 (Avoid release to the environment).
GHS pictograms: Standardised hazard symbols in a diamond orientation. The specific pictograms required depend on the hazard classification — for most consumer candles, the exclamation mark (!) pictogram is required.
Supplier information: Your business name and address (or the name of an EU/UK Responsible Person if you're selling into those markets).
Where to Get the Hazard Classification
You cannot determine the GHS classification yourself unless you're a qualified chemist with access to SDS data for every fragrance component. The correct process is:
- Request the SDS (Safety Data Sheet) for every fragrance oil from your supplier
- Have a qualified formulator or REACH/GHS consultant classify the mixture based on those SDSs
- Generate the GHS label elements from that classification
Some fragrance suppliers will provide the GHS label elements for their specific fragrance blends directly — ask your supplier whether this is available.
Never copy GHS label elements from another candle brand. Their fragrance blend is not yours. Their classification is not yours. The regulatory exposure from incorrect GHS labelling falls on the manufacturer (you), not on whoever you copied from.
Candle Safety Warnings
Beyond GHS requirements, consumer candle safety guidance (widely adopted from ASTM F2179 and equivalent standards) recommends the following warnings on every candle:
- Burn within sight
- Keep away from things that catch fire
- Keep away from children and pets
- Do not burn for more than 4 hours at a time (or per your specific candle's tested burn time)
- Stop use when only ½ inch of wax remains
- Allow candle to cool before handling
These warnings are typically set in very small type — 4pt to 5pt — and placed on the base label or the back/underside of the container label. Label Materials for Candles
Material choice is particularly important for candles because the environment is hostile. Candles burn. The container gets hot. There is typically some moisture from the melt pool near the wick area. Labels that look perfect in a print proof can peel, bubble, or go translucent after a single burn.
Matte Paper (Uncoated)
Looks like: Natural, craft, artisan. Very popular in the independent candle market, particularly with soy and beeswax producers.
Performance: Moderate. Uncoated paper labels are susceptible to moisture and heat. They will show fingerprints. On a glass vessel that gets warm during burning, paper labels near the flame zone can discolour or develop a waxy sheen as fragrance oil migrates.
Best for: Brands with a natural, handmade aesthetic. Cold-process testing your labels with your actual candle (let it burn 2–3 times and evaluate) is essential before committing to a print run.
Matte BOPP (Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene)
Looks like: Similar to matte paper at first glance, but with better durability.
Performance: Significantly more durable than paper. Water-resistant, heat-resistant to normal candle temperatures, doesn't absorb fragrance oils. This is the practical choice for most candle brands that want a natural aesthetic without the fragility of paper.
Best for: Most candle brands. Combines the visual of matte paper with real-world durability.
Gloss BOPP
Looks like: Bright, saturated, slightly shiny.
Performance: Same durability as matte BOPP. Colours look more vivid, photography and product images reproduce better.
Best for: Brands with bright, contemporary, maximalist design. Not a good choice for brands going for a natural or artisan aesthetic — it reads as synthetic.
Clear BOPP
Looks like: No label — when applied to clear glass, the design appears to float on the surface of the vessel.
Performance: Excellent durability. The "no label" aesthetic is extremely popular in premium and botanical candle brands.
Best for: Premium candles in clear glass where the wax colour is part of the product presentation. Requires careful ink coverage consideration — large areas of colour will block the glass, defeating the purpose.
Kraft Paper Labels
Looks like: Brown, recycled, handmade.
Performance: Poor in hot environments. Absorbs fragrance oil. Not recommended for labels that will be close to the burn zone.
Best for: Box lids, outer packaging, informational inserts — not for the jar label itself.
Sizing Your Candle Label
Label sizing depends on the container — but some guidelines apply across most formats.
Measure first, design second. The circumference of the jar at the intended label height determines your label width. The width of the label plus a small gap is the maximum design area. Many makers get this backwards and design a beautiful label that doesn't fit the jar they ordered.
For a standard 8oz (227g) tumbler candle glass (roughly 70mm diameter at mid-height), the circumference is approximately 220mm. A label width of 180–200mm gives a 10–20mm gap that prevents overlap while reading as intentional.
Label height considerations:
- High enough to be clearly visible from the front
- Low enough to avoid the wax fill level at the top
- Stays clear of any embossed or moulded detail on the glass
Wrap-around vs front panel vs base label:
- Wrap-around: One label encircles the jar. Maximum design real estate but must accommodate the overlap seam.
- Front panel + back panel: Two separate labels. Front panel has branding and product name; back panel carries regulatory information and warnings. More controlled visual hierarchy.
- Front panel + base label: Popular for brands that want a clean side view with all safety information hidden underneath. Compliance-wise, mandatory safety information must be accessible to the consumer without requiring them to unscrew a lid — a base label is compliant in most markets but verify with your market-specific regulatory guidance.
Design Principles for Candle Labels That Actually Sell
Name Hierarchy
The scent name is often more important than the brand name for the purchase decision. A customer who likes "Tobacco & Amber" or "Sea Salt & Driftwood" will buy that scent — the brand is secondary on the first purchase. After they love the candle, they look for the brand name when they come back.
This doesn't mean the brand name should be tiny. It means the hierarchy — brand name, scent name, container size — should be deliberate and tested against how customers actually browse.
Typography for Candle Brands
The typeface carries most of the brand personality on a candle label. The format (jar, tin, pillar) communicates category; the type communicates character.
Common typographic approaches:
- Serif typefaces with high x-height: Classic, readable, works across natural and luxury positioning. Think Freight, Cormorant, or customised versions of transitional serifs.
- Clean geometric sans-serif: Contemporary, works for modern/minimalist brands. Futura, Neue Haas Grotesk, or custom geometric sans.
- Script or handwritten accent type: Adds warmth. Best used sparingly — a scent name or tagline in script works; a full label in script is illegible.
- Mixed type systems: A serif brand name plus a clean sans for informational text. Extremely common and effective when the pairing is considered rather than random.
The regulatory text (GHS warnings, safety statements) will always be in a clean, small sans-serif regardless of the decorative type choices — no one sets hazard statements in a script.
Colour for Candle Labels

- Luxury/premium brands: black, white, ivory, gold accents, very restrained colour

If the project includes a full candle brand identity (brand name, logo, colour palette, label design for multiple SKUs), expect $3,000–$8,000 depending on the number of scent variants and label formats.
Print costs for candle labels (digital roll printing, minimum 250 labels) typically range from $0.30 to $1.20 per label depending on size, material, and quantity. Ordering 1,000 labels versus 250 usually halves the per-label cost — but only order quantities you'll actually use before a redesign.

Do I need GHS labels on soy candles? Yes, if your candle contains fragrance oil above the concentration thresholds that trigger GHS classification. Most scented candles do. The GHS classification is based on the fragrance components, not the wax type. Soy, paraffin, and beeswax candles with the same fragrance oil carry the same GHS requirements.
Can I put the safety warnings on a hang tag instead of the label? In most markets, mandatory GHS information must appear on the product itself or on a label firmly affixed to it.
