Cyprus joined the EU in 2004 and adopted the euro in 2008, making Nicosia- and Limassol-based brands fully subject to EU FIC Regulation 1169/2011. Halloumi (Χαλλούμι / Hellim), a semi-hard cheese, received EU PDO registration on 12 April 2021 (effective 1 October 2021); PDO specifications require that goat and sheep milk constitute a minimum 51% of the milk used (in force from 2024), with the European Commission extending Cyprus's transition period to full compositional compliance by five further years in July 2024. Commandaria, a dessert wine produced in 14 designated villages on the southern foothills of the Troodos Mountains, holds EU PDO status under an appellation whose domestic legal framework was established on 2 March 1990; it is broadly recognised as the world's oldest named wine in continuous production, with mandatory aging of at least two years in oak barrels on the island. Cyprus holds 7 PDO and 4 PGI wine designations. Limassol has grown into Europe's largest third-party ship management centre, with over 200 companies managing approximately 20% of the world's third-party fleet and contributing more than €1 billion annually (~7% of national GDP); the Cyprus ship registry ranks eleventh globally by tonnage.
