The only meaningful trade channel is through China (PRC) under bilateral non-sanctioned categories (food, agricultural inputs); this trade uses Mandarin Chinese or Korean documentation by agreement. South Korea's inter-Korean trade has been essentially suspended since 2016. Any packaging, branding, or trade facilitation services provided to DPRK-linked entities by non-North Korean persons are subject to sanctions enforcement risk.

Kim Jong Un's government has pursued simultaneous economic goals (byungjin policy of parallel military and economic development) while progressively normalising the use of foreign currency (USD, CNY, EUR) in domestic markets and allowing a degree of informal private commerce (jangmadang market economy).
