Turkmenistan (population approximately 6 million, capital Ashgabat) is one of the world's most isolated countries — ruled by a single-party state under President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov (who stepped down formally in favour of his son Serdar Berdimuhamedov in 2022 but retains the title 'National Leader') — and maintains a closed, heavily state-controlled economy. Turkmenistan holds the world's fourth-largest natural gas reserves (the Galkynysh field in Mary Province is the world's second-largest gas field by proven reserves); however, natural gas export routes are critically constrained: the main pipeline to China (Central Asia-China Gas Pipeline) accounts for nearly all export capacity following Turkmenistan's near-total break with Russia's Gazprom export monopoly in 2009 (the pipeline explosion of 2009 ended most Russian gas transit).
