Zimbabwe (population approximately 16 million, capital Harare) was once known as the 'breadbasket of Africa' for its agricultural productivity but experienced a catastrophic economic collapse following President Robert Mugabe's fast-track land reform programme (2000–2008) which redistributed white-owned commercial farms; the resulting agricultural disruption contributed to world-record hyperinflation (peaking at an estimated 89.7 sextillion percent in November 2008) and the abandonment of the Zimbabwean dollar in 2009 in favour of a multi-currency system (USD, South African rand, and others).
