EU FIC Regulation 1169/2011 applies; labels must be in Hungarian for domestic retail. NÉBIH (Nemzeti Élelmiszerlánc-biztonsági Hivatal — National Food Chain Safety Office) governs food safety enforcement. The public health product tax (NETA, the so-called 'Robin Hood tax'), levied on products with high sugar, salt, or caffeine content, adds a product-specific compliance layer for packaged snacks, soft drinks, and energy bars. As of 1 August 2023, OGYÉI (National Institute of Pharmacy and Nutrition) and the National Public Health Centre (NNK) merged into NNGYK (Nemzeti Népegészségügyi és Gyógyszerészeti Központ — National Centre for Public Health and Pharmacy), which now regulates pharmaceutical marketing authorisations, labelling, and packaging; older compliance documents citing OGYÉI as the standalone pharmaceutical regulator reference a superseded structure.

Tokaji aszú wine — produced exclusively in the Tokaj-Hegyalja region — holds one of Europe's oldest EU PDO registrations and is Hungary's most internationally recognised GI product, with export packaging requiring the official PDO mark and vintage designation. Pick Szeged salami holds EU PGI status. Hungary's deposit return scheme (DRS), branded REPONT and operated under Government Decree 450/2023, launched on 1 January 2024: a 50 HUF deposit applies to plastic, metal, and glass beverage containers of 0.1–3 litres (excluding milk-based products), collected through reverse vending machines at retailers over 400 m² — making REPONT-compatible labelling a mandatory design requirement for beverage packaging sold in Hungary.
