Pouch Types & Structural Options
Stand-up pouches (SUP) with bottom gusset are the most common flexible packaging format for food, supplements, and pet products. We also design flat bottom bags (also called box-bottom or square-bottom pouches) for premium coffee and tea; side-gusset pouches for large-volume packaging; quad-seal bags (flat-bottom 4-seal); retort pouches for shelf-stable food requiring high-temperature sterilisation; and spouted pouches for liquid and semi-liquid products. Each style requires a different structural setup in terms of panel dimensions, gusset depth, and maximum fill volume.

Closure & Valve Options
Zip closures (press-to-close PCTFE zip), tear notch placement, child-resistant zipper options, top-fill vs bottom-fill orientations, degassing valves (for freshly roasted coffee), and spouted pouches for sauces and liquids. We design artwork to work around each closure and valve placement without compromising key design elements.

Film, Substrate & Finish Options
Substrate choice: matte BOPP (premium feel, popular in supplements and pet food), glossy BOPP (standard food packaging), kraft/paper look (natural/organic brands), clear transparent film (no-label look, product visible), foil/Mylar (barrier protection for oxygen and moisture-sensitive products). Overlaminate options: matte soft-touch laminate, gloss laminate, metallic metalised finish. Window placement for product visibility: clear circular or oval windows, clear strip windows. We advise on substrate and finish selection based on your product's barrier requirements and brand positioning.

Regulations & Mandatory Information on Pouches
Flexible pouches for food, supplements, and pet products must carry all applicable mandatory information. For food: FDA Nutrition Facts or EU FIC nutrition declaration, ingredient list, allergen bold-text, net weight, manufacturer details, country of origin. For supplements: Supplement Facts panel (FDA DSHEA format), structure/function claim disclaimer, lot number, expiry date. For pet food: AAFCO statement (USA), feeding guidelines, guaranteed analysis. We design all these panels into the back and side panels of the pouch in a compliant, legible layout.

Pouch Artwork Technical Specifications
Flexible pouch artwork requires specific technical knowledge. Print-bleed on pouches is typically 3mm minimum (vs 3mm for board). Critical content must sit well within the safe zone to allow for web-printing registration tolerance. Gusset area artwork must be mirror-imaged and set up as a separate artboard. For retort pouches, colour choices must account for the way certain inks hold up to the retort sterilisation process — we specify heat-stable inks. For digital flexo printing, minimum trap and dot gain settings differ from offset.

Mockups & Visualisation
Every flexible pouch project includes 3D photorealistic renders showing the pouch standing up as it would on a retail shelf. We provide front-view, three-quarter-view, and top-view renders. Lifestyle mockups (pouch photographed in a product context — kitchen counter, gym bag, etc.) are available as an add-on. These renders are ideal for Amazon listing images, social media launches, and investor presentations before physical samples are produced.

Print File Set for Flexible Packaging
You receive: (1) a flat dieline-based print-ready PDF with all panels (front, back, gussets, zip area) laid out as a flat unfolded artwork; (2) an editable Adobe Illustrator source file with layered construction; (3) 3D renders; (4) specification sheet summarising pouch dimensions, gusset depth, closure spec, film type, and print method. Files are compatible with the majority of flexible packaging printers and converters, including suppliers who use Esko or Illustrator workflows.

Sustainable Flexible Packaging Options
Traditional flexible packaging films (multi-layer laminates of PET/PE/foil) are not recyclable via mainstream UK or US MRF sorting systems. Sustainable alternatives include mono-material PE or PP pouches (recyclable via LDPE film collection points), certified compostable films (PLA/PBAT, TUV OK Compost certification), recycled content films (PCR polyethylene), and paper-based flexible packaging (coated Kraft with minimal plastic layer). We advise on the trade-offs between barrier performance, recyclability, print quality, and cost premium for each sustainable film option.
