Uzbekistan (population approximately 36 million, capital Tashkent) is Central Asia's most populous country and has undergone significant liberalisation since President Shavkat Mirziyoyev replaced the authoritarian Islam Karimov (who ruled 1989–2016). Uzbekistan is the world's 6th-largest gold producer (Navoi Mining and Metallurgical Combinat — NMMC — operates the Muruntau gold mine, one of the world's largest open-pit gold mines and among its lowest-cost producers), and a historically significant cotton producer — the 'white gold' of Soviet-era Central Asia.
