Social Media Design in India
Regulatory Environment
FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) mandates registration/license numbers, nutritional information, and the Veg (green dot) or Non-Veg (brown dot) symbol on all packaged food, under the Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) Regulations, 2020. A 30 May 2025 FSSAI advisory directed food business operators to stop using unqualified '100%' claims on labels and marketing under the Food Safety and Standards (Advertising and Claims) Regulations, 2018. A 2025 draft amendment proposes bold, larger-font RDA-percentage declarations for added sugar, saturated fat and sodium, plus a mandatory logo on milk and milk-product packaging. Separately, amended Plastic Waste Management Rules introduced mandatory plastic-packaging labelling — identifying the producer, importer, or brand owner — effective 1 July 2025, enforced by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) for traceability. LMA (Legal Metrology Act 2009) and the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules 2011 require MRP, net quantity, and manufacturer address on every consumer package; a 2022 amendment permits select declarations (manufacturer address, generic name, dimensions, customer care) to be conveyed via QR code for electronics. BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) certification is mandatory for specified product categories. Pharmaceutical packaging requires CDSCO (Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation) approval.
Key Industries
Pharmaceutical (world's largest generic-drug supplier by volume — over 20% of global generic medicine volume, USD 30.5 billion in FY2025 exports), IT services, FMCG (Hindustan Unilever, ITC, Dabur), spice export, textile, and e-commerce/quick-commerce (USD 129.7 billion market in 2025).
Market Context — India
India's packaging market is one of the fastest-growing in the world — sized at roughly USD 101–106 billion in 2025 and forecast to reach USD 150–170 billion by 2030–2032 — driven by a food and beverage segment that alone accounts for nearly half of demand and an e-commerce sector valued at USD 129.7 billion in 2025. Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru-based brands must navigate not just FSSAI-registered English/Hindi bilingual packaging with the mandatory Veg (green dot) / Non-Veg (brown dot) mark, but a labelling regime that is actively tightening: a 30 May 2025 FSSAI advisory banned unqualified '100%' claims on food labels as undefined and misleading, and a 2025 draft amendment would require bold, larger-font Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) percentages for added sugar, salt, and saturated fat plus a mandatory logo on milk-product packaging. India's pharmaceutical sector exported USD 30.5 billion of drugs in FY2025 (9.4% growth) and supplies over 20% of the world's generic medicine volume, giving CDSCO-compliant, tamper-evident pharma packaging outsized commercial importance — alongside continued demand for vernacular-language labels in Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, and other scheduled languages for state-level distribution.
