Tonga (population approximately 100,000, capital Nuku'alofa on Tongatapu island) is the only Pacific Island monarchy — the Kingdom of Tonga — and has maintained continuous royal rule under the Tupou dynasty since 1845; King Tupou VI has reigned since 2012. Remittances from the Tongan diaspora in New Zealand, Australia, and the United States constitute approximately 35–40% of GDP, making them by far the dominant income source. Tonga was severely affected by the eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai underwater volcano on January 15, 2022 — one of the most powerful volcanic eruptions recorded in the modern era; the associated tsunami and ash fall caused widespread damage across the islands, and the severed submarine communications cable required several weeks for repair.
