Uzbekistan (population approximately 36 million, capital Tashkent) is Central Asia's most populous country and has undergone significant liberalisation since President Shavkat Mirziyoyev replaced the authoritarian Islam Karimov (who ruled 1989–2016). Uzbekistan has become a significant automotive producer: GM Uzbekistan (formerly UzDaewoo, now producing Chevrolet-branded vehicles under GM licence in Asaka) is the dominant domestic brand and also exports to CIS markets.
