If you have ever sent artwork to a packaging printer and received a file back covered in coloured lines, fold indicators, and unfamiliar annotations, you were looking at a dieline. Understanding what a dieline is and how to work with it is one of the most practically useful things a brand owner or first-time packaging designer can learn — because mistakes in dieline setup are among the most expensive and most preventable errors in packaging production.


What Is a Dieline?

A dieline (also called a cut-and-crease template, score template, or structural artwork template) is a flat, two-dimensional representation of a three-dimensional packaging structure. It shows:

  • Where the packaging substrate will be cut (the outer boundary of each panel and tab)
  • Where the substrate will be folded or scored (the fold lines that define box panels, flaps, and closures)
  • Where perforations occur (tearaway sections, opening tabs)
  • Where glue areas are (panels that will be adhered during assembly)

Think of a dieline as the flat pattern you would use to cut and fold a piece of card into a three-dimensional box — similar to a paper craft template, but engineered to exact tolerances for the production process.


How Dielines Are Created

Dielines are created by structural packaging engineers, often using dedicated packaging CAD software such as ArtiosCAD, CAPE, or Score! by Impack. For common standard formats — tuck-end boxes, straight-tuck end cartons, stand-up pouches — printers and packaging suppliers typically have standard dielines in their libraries that are available to brands on request.

Custom structural packaging — unusual dimensions, bespoke closures, novel formats — requires custom dieline development. This is an engineering exercise, not a graphic design exercise.


Anatomy of a Dieline

A typical dieline for a folding carton box contains several distinct elements, each represented by a different line type or colour.

Cut lines (also called trim lines or die cut lines). The outer boundary of the unfolded packaging. Everything outside the cut line is waste substrate that will be removed by the die during production. Cut lines are typically shown in solid red or magenta.

Score lines (fold lines, crease lines). The lines along which the substrate is scored (compressed or partially cut) to allow clean, accurate folding. Score lines do not penetrate the substrate completely. They are typically shown in dashed blue or dashed green.

Perforation lines. Similar to score lines but with actual pierced holes at regular intervals, allowing the material to be torn cleanly along the perforation. Used for opening strips and tearaway seals.

Glue zones. Areas that will receive adhesive during assembly. Typically indicated by a hatched or shaded fill rather than a line type.

Panel labels. Text annotations identifying each panel (front, back, left side, right side, top, bottom, tuck flap) for orientation when setting artwork.


The Key Artwork Zones

When artwork is placed on a dieline, three distinct zones govern where elements should and should not appear.

Bleed

Bleed is the extension of background colour and imagery beyond the cut line into the waste area of the substrate. Typically 3mm (UK/EU) or 1/8 inch (US).

The reason bleed exists is mechanical tolerance. The die-cutting process is highly accurate but not perfect — there is a small amount of allowable variation (typically ±0.5mm–1mm) in where the cut falls relative to the artwork. If a background colour stops exactly at the cut line and the cut falls slightly inside the line, a thin stripe of unprinted white substrate becomes visible at the edge. Bleed prevents this: the colour extends beyond the cut line, so wherever the cut falls within tolerance, the colour runs to the edge cleanly.

Rule: All background colours and images that reach the edge of a panel must extend at least 3mm past the cut line.

Safe Zone (Live Area)

The safe zone (also called the live area or keep-out zone) is a margin inside the cut line within which all critical content — text, logos, key claims, barcodes — must remain. Typically 3–5mm inside the cut line.

The reason safe zones exist is the same mechanical tolerance that makes bleed necessary. A fold or cut that falls slightly outside tolerance can carry critical content to the edge, cutting it off or positioning it precariously close to the cut. Elements within the safe zone are protected from this variation.

Rule: No text, no logos, no barcodes, and no other critical content should appear within 3–5mm of the cut line (or more, as specified by the printer).

Fold Zone

Along score lines, there is a zone on either side of the fold where content should be avoided. When a substrate folds, the surface buckles slightly at the fold point, and content placed in this zone can appear distorted or misaligned.

Rule: Keep content at least 3mm away from score lines on each side of the fold. For thicker substrates, this clearance should be wider.


Working With a Dieline in Adobe Illustrator

Most professional packaging artwork is produced in Adobe Illustrator, which is the industry standard for dieline-based packaging artwork. Here is the correct workflow:

Step 1: Place the dieline on its own layer. Import the dieline file (typically an .ai, .pdf, or .eps) and place it on a dedicated locked layer. Name this layer clearly — "Dieline" or "Structure." This layer should not print; it is a guide only. In Illustrator, right-click the layer and set it to non-printing.

Step 2: Create separate layers for artwork. All artwork lives on layers above (or below) the dieline layer. Typical layer organisation: Dieline (non-printing) / Die Cut Guide / Spot UV / Foil (special finishes, if applicable) / Pantone Spot Colours / CMYK Artwork / White Ink (if printing on foil or dark substrate).

Step 3: Set bleed zones. Create a bleed guide 3mm outside the cut line. A simple method: select the cut path, expand by 3mm (Object > Path > Offset Path > +3mm), and use this path as a guide for extending background fills.

Step 4: Set safe zone guides. Create a safe zone guide 4–5mm inside the cut line, inset from the cut line. Use this as the inner boundary for all text and critical elements.

Step 5: Set up colour correctly. All colours in print-ready packaging artwork should be CMYK or named Pantone spot colours. No RGB. No hex. If special finishes are used (spot UV, foil, metallic), they must be set up as separate spot colour channels with appropriate names (typically "Die", "Varnish", "Foil Stamp" or as specified by the printer).

Step 6: Outline all text and embed all images. Before finalising the file, convert all type to outlines (Type > Create Outlines) and embed all linked images. This prevents font-missing errors at the printer and ensures images are contained in the file.

Step 7: Export as PDF/X-1a or PDF/X-4. The standard print-ready PDF format for packaging is PDF/X-1a (for CMYK-only work) or PDF/X-4 (for files that include spot colours or transparency). Consult the printer's technical guide for their preferred PDF standard.


Common Dieline Mistakes

Artwork placed without accounting for glue zones. Glue zones are areas where adhesive is applied and panels are bonded. Artwork in glue zones may be obscured by adhesive residue or damaged during assembly. Avoid placing critical elements in glue zones.

Reversed dieline. Some dielines are set up with the inside face of the packaging as the view — meaning the artwork must be placed as a mirror image. Confirm with the printer whether the dieline is inside-out or outside-in before setting up artwork.

Score line confusion. On some dielines, score lines indicate where the fold occurs on the surface you're looking at, but the actual fold may be in the opposite direction. A box that opens at the top has internal scores that fold inward. If a designer places artwork without understanding fold direction, elements that should be on adjacent panels can end up on the wrong face after assembly.

Using dieline lines as print elements. The dieline layer should not print. If the dieline is accidentally left on a printing layer and the print file includes it, the cut lines and score lines will print as coloured lines on the finished packaging.


Dielines for Different Packaging Formats

Folding carton boxes. The most common format for cosmetic, supplement, and consumer goods packaging. Standard box formats (tuck-end, sleeve, crash-lock base) have standard dielines. Custom dimensions can be generated from standard templates.

Flexible packaging (pouches). Stand-up pouches have a different kind of dieline — typically a panel layout showing the front face, back face, gusset, and seal zones. The layout shows where the graphic panels fall when the pouch is sealed and filled.

Labels. Labels technically have a dieline — the outer boundary of the label shape, along with any cut-out windows or die-cut details. For simple rectangular or oval labels, the dieline is straightforward. For custom shapes, the die-cut path must be specified exactly.

Corrugated boxes (shippers and retail-ready): Corrugated dielines follow the same principles as folding carton dielines but at larger scale, with wider score tolerances and different fold mechanics.

Where do I get the dieline for my packaging? Your packaging supplier or printer will typically provide a dieline for the structure you've specified. If you're using a standard stock box from a supplier catalogue, the dieline is available from the catalogue. If you're using a custom structure, the supplier generates the dieline as part of the structural design process.

Can I create my own dieline? For very simple structures, yes — particularly if you are using standard folding carton formats for which templates are publicly available. For custom structures, structural packaging engineering expertise is required. An incorrectly engineered dieline will produce packaging that doesn't fold correctly, seal properly, or stack as intended.

What is the difference between a dieline and a template? The terms are largely interchangeable in practice.
