Pantone vs CMYK for Packaging: When to Use Spot Colours and How to Specify Them
Colour is one of the highest-stakes decisions in packaging design. Buyers associate specific colours with specific brands — Tiffany's robin egg blue, Cadbury's purple, Heinz's red. Packaging that arrives from the printer in a colour that is perceptibly different from what was specified risks failing brand recognition, failing retailer ranging requirements, or simply looking wrong in ways that are difficult to explain to a factory overseas.
The core of getting colour right is understanding the difference between CMYK and Pantone, knowing when each is appropriate, and specifying colours in a way that leaves no room for a print supplier to guess.
How Colour Is Reproduced in Print
All packaging colour reproduction works by one of two mechanisms: process printing or spot colour printing.
Process printing (CMYK) reproduces colour by layering four inks — Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black (the K stands for Key, which is black). The inks are applied in patterns of tiny dots at different angles; at a normal reading distance, the dots blend optically to produce a continuous range of colours. CMYK can reproduce a wide gamut of colours, but it cannot reproduce every colour equally well, and results vary based on the substrate, the press calibration, and environmental conditions on the day of printing.
Spot colour printing uses a single pre-mixed ink of a specific colour, formulated to an exact reference standard. Pantone's Matching System (PMS) is the dominant standard for spot colours in commercial print. When a design specifies PMS 485 C (a bright red), the printer mixes ink to that exact Pantone formula. The result is consistent across presses, print runs, substrates, and geographies — as long as the Pantone formula is followed correctly.
The Pantone Matching System
Pantone, now part of X-Rite, produces a standardised colour library used throughout the design, print, and manufacturing industries. The key Pantone libraries for packaging are:
Pantone Solid Coated (C) and Uncoated (U). Solid Coated (suffix C) is used for coated paper and board substrates — glossy or satin finishes. Uncoated (suffix U) is used for uncoated paper and board. The same PMS number looks different on coated and uncoated substrates because the ink absorbs differently into the surface. Never use a C reference on an uncoated substrate without checking the U equivalent.
Pantone Extended Gamut (XGC). An expanded library of spot colours achievable with a seven-colour process (CMYKOGV — adding Orange, Green, and Violet). Used in high-end packaging print where extended gamut presses are available.
Pantone Metallics. Metallic inks for gold, silver, copper, and other metallic finishes. These require a dedicated metallic ink rather than CMYK simulation — CMYK cannot reproduce a convincing metallic.
Pantone Pastels & Neons. Specific Pantone families for pastel and fluorescent colours, which also cannot be reproduced accurately in CMYK due to gamut limitations.
CMYK vs Pantone: When to Use Each
The decision between CMYK and Pantone (or a combination) depends on the printing process being used, the substrate, and the colour accuracy requirements of the brand.
Use CMYK when:
The design contains full-colour photography or complex gradients. Photographic images cannot be reproduced as spot colours — they require the full four-colour process. If the packaging design includes product photography, environmental imagery, or detailed illustration, CMYK is required.
The print process is digital. Most digital label and short-run packaging presses print in CMYK only (or CMYK plus white for opaque substrates). Digital print cannot use Pantone spot inks.
Cost is a primary constraint. Pantone spot inks are typically added as additional colour stations on an offset or flexo press. Each additional colour adds cost. A two-colour design (brand colour + black) in spot Pantone uses two ink stations; the same design in CMYK still uses four. On a long run, spot colour can be more cost-effective per unit; on a short run, the setup cost of spot inks may not be recoverable.
The colour falls within the CMYK gamut and variation is acceptable. Many colours, particularly those in the mid-range of the gamut (many greens, teals, and oranges), can be reproduced reasonably well in CMYK. If the brand does not have a tightly controlled colour identity, CMYK variation may be acceptable.
Use Pantone spot colours when:
The brand has a proprietary colour that must be consistent. If your brand colour is a specific warm red that must match across packaging, website, signage, and retail display materials, Pantone is the only reliable way to maintain that consistency across different print processes and suppliers.
The colour is outside the CMYK gamut. Vivid oranges, many purples, and metallic or fluorescent colours cannot be reproduced accurately in CMYK. Pantone provides access to colours that CMYK physically cannot achieve.
Consistency between print runs matters. CMYK results are affected by press calibration, ink viscosity, humidity, and substrate variation. Spot Pantone inks, correctly mixed to formula, produce more consistent results across print runs and print suppliers.
The print process supports it. Offset lithography, flexographic printing, and screen printing all support spot colours. If your packaging is being printed by one of these processes at volume, spot Pantone is a realistic option.
How to Specify Colours for Packaging
Colour specification is where many brand-supplier relationships break down. Vague colour references — "our blue," "similar to that," "matching the website" — put the printer in a position where they cannot guarantee a result and where disputes are inevitable.
Always specify Pantone references. Even if the final print is CMYK, specifying a Pantone reference as the colour target gives the printer a verifiable standard to aim for and a measurement reference for checking the result.
Use the correct Pantone suffix for the substrate. As noted above, a C reference is for coated substrates and a U reference for uncoated. If both coated and uncoated versions of packaging are being produced, specify both Pantone references explicitly.
Specify CMYK conversion values if not using spot ink. When converting a Pantone colour to CMYK for a process-only press, use the Pantone colour bridge conversion values rather than the designer's screen-based conversion. Pantone publishes coated and uncoated bridge values for every Pantone colour, showing the CMYK equivalent that best approximates the spot colour on each substrate type.
Never use RGB or hex values for print. RGB is an additive light-based colour model used for screens. Print is subtractive — it uses ink. RGB values cannot be mapped directly to print without gamut conversion, and the result is unpredictable. Hex values are simply RGB in hexadecimal notation; they have the same problem. Specify print colours in CMYK and reference Pantone.
Specify Pantone separately from the CMYK build. In your print-ready artwork, Pantone spot colours should be set up as spot colour swatches (not process swatches) in Adobe Illustrator or InDesign. If the file is set up incorrectly, the printer may output the Pantone colour as a CMYK separation without flagging it, resulting in a colour that looks correct on screen but is wrong in print.
Colour Proofing
No matter how carefully colours are specified, the only reliable way to confirm a colour result before a production run is a physical proof.
Contract proof (Epson/Fogra certified). A high-quality digital proof output on calibrated equipment to a certified standard (ISO 12647-7 for digital contract proofing). This is a reliable representation of CMYK print. It is not, however, a reliable proof for Pantone spot colours, which have their own gamut.
Wet proof (press proof). An actual press run using the production inks on the production substrate. This is the only reliable way to see exactly what a Pantone spot colour or metallic ink will look like in production. Wet proofing is expensive and time-consuming — typically only justified for high-volume print runs where the cost of getting it wrong is significant.
Drawdown. A physical drawdown of the mixed spot ink on the production substrate. The printer mixes the Pantone ink and applies it to a sample of the substrate with a hand tool. This shows how the ink looks on the specific substrate without the cost of a full press proof.
Common Colour Errors in Packaging Production
Using a different Pantone number on different files. If the logo uses PMS 286 C and the packaging artwork uses PMS 285 C, those are two different blues — one darker, one lighter. The difference is significant when seen together.
Not accounting for substrate absorption. A Pantone colour on a kraft (brown) substrate looks very different from the same Pantone colour on a white-coated substrate because the brown of the kraft is visible through all but the most opaque inks. Pantone publishes natural substrate conversion values for common substrates.
Overprint and transparency errors. In artwork files, overprint settings (where one colour prints on top of another rather than knocking out) affect the appearance of the final print. An incorrectly set overprint can make black text appear to knock out the background incorrectly, or can cause unintended ink mixing where colours overlap.
Screen-to-print colour shift. Every monitor is calibrated differently, and even calibrated monitors show colours under backlighting that no printed packaging will match. Designers who rely on their screen as the primary colour reference and who don't use physical Pantone chips will consistently produce colour specifications that don't match expectations.
Practical Colour Specification Checklist
Before sending artwork to a print supplier:
- All brand colours are specified as Pantone PMS references with correct C or U suffix
- CMYK conversion values are specified using Pantone bridge values, not screen-based conversion
- No RGB or hex values appear in the artwork's colour palette
- Spot colours are set up as spot swatches in the native file, not as CMYK with a Pantone name
- Physical Pantone chip has been checked under realistic lighting conditions (not just screen)
- Substrate interaction has been considered (coated vs. uncoated, white vs. kraft)
- Proofing requirement has been specified in the print brief
FAQ
Can I match a Pantone colour exactly in CMYK? No — not for all Pantone colours. Some Pantone colours fall outside the CMYK gamut and cannot be reproduced accurately in process printing. For these colours, the CMYK approximation is always a compromise. For colours within the CMYK gamut, the approximation can be very close on well-calibrated equipment, but some variation is inherent.
Do I need to buy Pantone guides? Yes, if you're specifying colour for print seriously. A Pantone Solid Coated and Uncoated fan deck, updated every 2–3 years (the pigments in the fan decks fade over time), is the minimum. Pantone Connect (the digital subscription service) provides digital Pantone references but is not a substitute for physical chips, which must be viewed under standard lighting conditions.
What happens if I don't specify Pantone and just send a CMYK file? The printer will print the CMYK values in the file to their press standard. If your CMYK values are a reasonable approximation of your brand colour and your print supplier runs a well-calibrated press, the result may be acceptable. If the press is not well-calibrated, if you change print suppliers, or if you're printing across multiple formats simultaneously, results will vary and matching will be unreliable.
