Food packaging design is the creation of containers, labels, and wrappers that protect food products during distribution, communicate nutritional information to consumers, and project brand identity on the retail shelf. It is simultaneously a regulatory compliance exercise and a brand communication challenge. In the USA, all food packaging must comply with FDA 21 CFR Part 101 — the federal food labeling regulation governing Nutrition Facts panels, ingredient list format, allergen declarations, net quantity of contents, and front-of-pack claims. In the EU, EU FIC Regulation 1169/2011 mandates equivalent information with specific type size requirements and mandatory allergen highlighting in bold.
Our food packaging design always begins with a regulatory audit of your product. For the USA: we design FDA-format Nutrition Facts panels (standard, dual-column, and simplified versions), allergen declarations with FDA-mandated plain language cross-contact statements, net weight in both metric and imperial, and manufacturer/distributor details. For the EU: we apply EU FIC 1169/2011 allergen bold-text requirements, mandatory nutrient declaration tables, and country of origin labeling. For the UK post-Brexit: we apply UK FSS guidance and the updated retained UK food information regulations.
We design packaging for: snacks and confectionery (stand-up pouches, flow-wrap bags, pillow bags), bakery products (paper bags, window boxes, tins), frozen food (cartons, bags, shrink sleeves), beverages (bottle labels, can wraps, cartons), condiments and sauces (jar labels, bottle labels, sachets), health foods and superfoods (premium kraft pouches, glass jar labels), organic products (USDA Organic-certified seal placement, EU Organic logo usage rules), meal kits (branded boxes with window, insert cards), and restaurant/foodservice (large-format bulk packaging). Each category has unique regulatory and aesthetic requirements.
Food packaging format choice depends on product type, shelf-life requirements, retail channel, and sustainability goals. Stand-up pouches in barrier film (BOPP or Mylar) are ideal for coffee, snacks, and protein powders — requiring degassing valves, zip closures, and tear notches. SBS board boxes work for dry goods, cereals, and frozen foods. Glass jar labels require wet-strength paper or BOPP film. Shrink sleeves offer full-body coverage for bottles and containers. We specify and design for each format, including correct bleed and die-cut requirements for each substrate.
Certified organic, non-GMO, and clean-label claims require precise artwork handling. USDA Organic seal use is regulated — the seal colour, minimum size, and placement rules must be followed exactly. EU and UK Organic logo usage has similar requirements. Non-GMO Project Verified butterfly mark has a defined usage guide. We are familiar with all of these mark usage requirements and apply them correctly to ensure your certified status is communicated without violating the certifying body's artwork guidelines.
Regulatory compliance alone does not sell food. Appetite appeal — the visual triggers that make a consumer's mouth water before they read a word — is what drives purchase. We use photography integration, colour psychology (warm reds and oranges increase perceived hunger cues; cool blues suggest freshness), portion-size callouts, serving suggestion photographs, and hero product shots to create packaging that wins in the 3-second shelf decision window. Our food packaging case studies demonstrate measurable sales uplift for clients after redesign.
Consumer demand for sustainable packaging is accelerating. We design for recyclable mono-material packaging (recyclable BOPP, recyclable PE), compostable packaging (PLA-based pouches), FSC-certified paperboard, and reduced-ink designs that minimise environmental impact. We correctly apply How2Recycle labels (USA), the On-Pack Recycling Label (UK OPRL), and EU Green Deal packaging compliance messaging. Sustainability claims on packaging are subject to FTC Green Guides (USA) and EU Green Claims Directive — we ensure your sustainability messaging is compliant.
